Gratitude for a Family Home and a Roof Overhead

Thanksgiving: a day when family and friends gather to feast on roasted turkey, mashed potatoes with gravy, and pumpkin pie in the family home.  It’s a paid day off from work, a chance to watch the Macy’s parade, an opportunity to catch a football game on the over-sized TV, or head out on an early Black Friday shopping spree. What more could you want from an American holiday? Truly we are blessed in our comfort and abundance.

Yet, for all that we have, we sometimes forget what this holiday is truly all about. This feels a little funny, considering the intent of this national holiday is spelled out right in the name itself: Thanksgiving.

Feeling Thankful for Your Family and Lifestyle in Your Family Home

It’s so easy to get lost in the commercial side of the holiday and overlook the true meaning of Thanksgiving. Today, take a moment to reflect on everything you are grateful for: a family, your beautiful home, good health, a career, friends, and loved ones. The relationships and memories built in your home are the most valuable assets you can have!

Recently, Harvard Health published an article that emphasized the importance of fostering gratitude in your life: “gratitude is strongly and consistently associated with greater happiness. Gratitude helps people feel more positive emotions, relish good experiences, improve their health, deal with adversity, and build strong relationships.”

Practicing gratitude is an excellent way to foster positive emotions, which in turn helps you enjoy all the details in life.

Developing Gratitude in Your Family Home

Your home environment is an important part of your life, and will set the tone for your attitude and feelings. You have the opportunity to create the perfect home for your family culture. Here are a few simple strategies that can be used to develop the gratitude you want to feel at home each day:

  • Clean up your space by removing clutter or any other items that are weighing you down
  • Walk through each room and feel gratitude for the gift it is to have a home to live in
  • Redecorate to ensure that your home supports your functional and emotional needs
  • Talk about gratitude around the dinner table when spending time with your family
  • Share your home with people that you love by inviting them for social gatherings
  • Verbalize gratitude daily when you see someone else doing something to help you
  • Keep a gratitude journal by your bedside and write down a few thoughts each morning

These tips are small, but they can be powerful steps to generate more gratitude in your home and develop the family culture that you desire.
